File Under... American Art

In earlier entries of this blog, I've mentioned an artist named JIM JOE. I recently sent him some fan mail and his response is so good, that I have to share it.

This is what I sent him:

I'm a big fan. Seeing a lot of good stuff in the East Village. Keep it up.
-Brent

His response:

TEENAGE LOVE

A FEELING
YOU FEEL
WHEN YOU FEEL
THAT WHAT YOU FEEL
IS A FEELING
YOU HAVE NEVER FELT BEFORE.

Sincearly,

JIM JOE

File Under... American Art (or maybe Colossi)

I saw Richard Serra's "Blind Spot" and "Open Ended" at Gagosian Gallery yesterday. If you're in New York City, please go look at it. In my opinion, Richard Serra is the greatest living American artist. His work is not only beautiful, and meaningful, but it speaks to its audience in a visceral way. It's huge, powerful, elegant, and when you stand near it it seems to affect gravity and time in a way that is physically scary. His work is titanic, and American, but communicates on a level beyond art - its almost like seeing a natural phenomenon. I love it.
